Cartier Tank Sizes Explained: Mini, Small, Medium, Large and XL

Designed by Louis Cartier in 1917, the Tank has been made in many versions over the past century: the Tank Louis Cartier, Tank Must, Tank Solo, Tank Française, Tank Américaine and more. Each comes in several sizes, and the names are not always obvious. This guide explains the common size names and how to choose.

The size names you will see

  • Mini – the smallest Tanks, typically under about 20 mm wide. Delicate and jewellery-like, mostly worn as ladies watches.
  • Small (SM / PM) – roughly 22 to 24 mm wide. The classic ladies Tank size and the most common vintage size.
  • Medium (MM) – roughly 25 to 27 mm wide. A versatile unisex size that suits most wrists.
  • Large (LM / GM) – roughly 25.5 to 28 mm wide, depending on the model. The traditional men’s Tank size.
  • XL – around 30 mm wide or more. A modern, bolder size for larger wrists.

Why a Tank wears bigger than the numbers suggest

A round 36 mm watch and a 26 mm Tank can look surprisingly similar on the wrist. That is because a rectangular case is long: the height from top to bottom (lug to lug) is often 33 mm or more on a large model. When comparing sizes, look at both width and length.

How to choose your size

  • Small wrist (under about 15 cm / 6 in): Mini or Small for a classic, elegant look.
  • Medium wrist (15 to 17.5 cm / 6 to 7 in): Small for a vintage feel, Medium or Large for a more modern look.
  • Larger wrist (over 17.5 cm / 7 in): Large or XL.

Vintage Tanks were traditionally worn small, and many men today choose a Small or Medium Tank on purpose for that understated, old-school style. There is no wrong answer.

Strap or bracelet?

Most Tanks are worn on a leather strap, which keeps them slim and dressy. Straps are easy to change, so a different colour can make a vintage Tank feel completely new.
