Cartier Tank Must vs Tank Louis Cartier: What’s the Difference?

If you are shopping for a vintage Cartier Tank, you will quickly see two very different prices for watches that look almost the same: the Must de Cartier Tank and the Tank Louis Cartier. Both share the famous rectangular case designed by Louis Cartier, but they are built from different materials, made for different buyers and priced very differently. Here is how to tell them apart and choose the right one for you.

The short answer

  • Tank Louis Cartier: solid 18K gold case, the classic “grown-up” Tank, higher price.
  • Must de Cartier Tank: vermeil case (sterling silver with a thick gold layer), launched in 1977, the most affordable way into vintage Cartier.

Tank Louis Cartier: the original in solid gold

The Tank Louis Cartier, named after the founder’s grandson Louis Cartier, was introduced in the early 1920s and is the version most people picture when they think of a gold Cartier Tank. The case is solid 18K gold, with slightly softer, rounded edges on the side “brancards”. Vintage examples from the 1960s and 1970s are often manual-wind mechanical watches, while later ones are usually quartz. Because of the solid gold and the history, the Tank Louis sits at the top of the vintage Tank market.

Must de Cartier Tank: vintage Cartier for everyday

In 1977 Cartier launched the “Les Must de Cartier” line to bring its icons to a younger, wider audience. The Must Tank keeps the same proportions and Roman numeral or lacquered dials, but the case is vermeil: sterling silver (stamped 925) coated with a thick layer of gold. Early Must Tanks from the late 1970s and early 1980s can be manual-wind; most later ones are quartz. The colourful lacquer dials, in burgundy, black, navy and ivory, are a big part of their charm.

How to tell them apart

  • Caseback: a Must Tank is marked as silver/925 (often with “Argent” and “Plaqué or G 20M”), while a Tank Louis carries 18K / 750 gold marks.
  • Weight: solid gold feels noticeably heavier in the hand.
  • Wear: on a Must, heavy polishing or wear can show the silver underneath at the edges; solid gold has no plating to wear through.
  • Paperwork: the reference number on the case and papers tells you exactly which model it is. Ask us and we will confirm it for any watch we sell.

Which one should you buy?

Choose a Must de Cartier Tank if you want the iconic Tank look, a coloured dial or an everyday vintage Cartier at a sensible price. Choose a Tank Louis Cartier if you want solid gold, the most classic version, and a watch to keep for decades. Both are genuine Cartier watches, and both look the part on the wrist.
